SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM ALERT

Calls claiming to be the SSA

Scammers are calling, pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and saying that your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity or being involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it or will ask for money or gift cards to keep your SSN or bank account safe.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.

  • SSA will never call to threaten you or your benefits. And SSA will not tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.

  • Don’t trust what you see on caller ID. Scammers can make it look like they’re calling from anywhere – even a real SSA phone number. Read what the real SSA has to say about this scam at their Social Security Matters blog.

  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you out of the blue. Or your bank account or credit card number.

  • Real SSA staff do call people who have ongoing business with the agency. But they’ll never threaten you, or ask you to send money.

  • If you got one of these calls, file a report at ftc.gov/complaint.

Going to College or Career School

Start with Smart Choices

Heading off to college is a time for new experiences, exploring academic interests, meeting new people and embracing newfound financial independence. However, financial independence comes with its share of risks and rewards. Are you prepared to make wise and informed financial decisions? Do you know how to recognize predatory credit offers? Can you properly manage a checking account? Do you have a savings plan? Do you understand your financial aid and how it will be repaid?

Smart financial choices you make today could help you achieve your future financial goals, like traveling or buying a car or home. However, money mistakes when you're just starting out can leave you in debt and negatively impact your credit score for a long period of time.

Inspector General Warns Public About Social Security Advisory Board-Related Scam

Posted on May 17, 2019 by Andrew Cannarsa, OIG Communications Director

The Inspector General of Social Security, Gail S. Ennis, is warning the public about a new variation of increasingly common government employee impersonation scams, this time involving the Social Security Advisory Board. The Advisory Board has reported that individuals are receiving scam phone calls displaying the board’s phone number on caller ID. The callers are reportedly attempting to obtain personal information, including Social Security numbers. If you receive this type of call, you should not engage with the caller or provide personal information or money in response to requests or threats.

These callers are employing tactics similar to impersonation schemes involving the IRS, SSA, and the SSA OIG. Inspector General Ennis advises that callers may use a variety of false scenarios or threats to obtain personal information or payments, often requested through gift cards or prepaid debit cards.

However, the Social Security Advisory Board typically does not contact the general public to request personal information over the phone. Moreover, government employees will never threaten you to obtain personal information or payments. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up.

“This caller-ID spoofing scheme has unfortunately evolved to include the Social Security Advisory Board, but it is the same type of scam, attempting to mislead people by using the trusted name of Social Security,” Inspector General Ennis said. “I encourage everyone to alert your family and friends about how common these scams are, and to be very cautious when speaking with unknown callers, even if you recognize the caller ID.”

Inspector General Ennis urges the public not to provide sensitive information over the phone or internet unless you are certain of who is receiving it. You should also never wire money or add money to a prepaid debit card to pay for any official government service.

If you receive a suspicious call, you may report that information online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report or by calling (800) 269-0271, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. You can also report these scams to the Federal Trade Commission through a new site specific to Social Security scams:  https://identitytheft.gov/ssa.

The Federal Communications Commission is alerting consumers to reported waves of “One Ring” or “Wangiri” scam robocalls targeting specific area codes in bursts, often calling multiple times in the middle of the night. Risk Alert

Vishing Scam Leads to PIN-Based Debit Fraud.
Members are being targeted in a vishing (phone-based phishing) scam in which fraudsters spoof phone numbers making the calls appear to originate from the credit union. The members are duped into providing CVV2/CVC2 codes and expiration dates for their debit cards. The fraudsters, already possessing the counterfeit mag stripe debit cards, use the information to change the PINs through voice response units. Then, they use the counterfeit cards to make ATM withdrawals, as well as purchases at Wal-Mart in Florida and Georgia. Credit unions in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia have been impacted by the scam.

Never give personal information over the phone.

Use "credit" not "debit" on all transactions (except ATM cash withdrawals). This can protect you from potential PIN access fraud.

The Credit Union’s independent auditors, Nearman, Maynard, Vallez, CPAs, PA., are conducting an annual audit of our financial statement. This is an important part of fulfilling the audit requirement established by the National Credit Union Administration, the governmental body that regulates all federally insured credit unions. If you receive a letter asking to verify your account balance as of March 31, 2018, please complete and return as instructed.
